River Falls Reads 2012 Essay Contest - pdf
“You want to be where everybody knows your name.”

The novel Grand Opening focuses on a family’s move from Minneapolis to the fictional, small Minnesota town of Plum, and the resulting triumphs, challenges and trials they go through in adjusting to their lives there.

If so, you are invited to take part in an essay contest focusing on something humorous, poignant, endearing, or just plain silly on the theme of:

Contest Guidelines:

A panel of three distinguished River Falls residents will judge the essays.

Winning essays will be read, either by the author or a designee, at a special River Falls Reads program on Sunday, February 12 at 1 pm featuring Mayor Don Richards who will read from his book Kinnickinnic Country.

Submit essays by January 31 in person or by mail to:

About the Book
Twelve-year old Brendan tells the story, set in 1944-45, that begins with his parents' decision to buy a run-down grocery store in Plum, a tiny Minnesota town. What they discover about small town idealism, bigotry, and good old American values will change them and the town forever....

About the Author
Jon Hassler (March 30, 1933 - March 20, 2008) was an American writer and teacher known for his novels about small-town life in Minnesota. He held the positions of Regents Professor Emeritus and Writer-in-Residence at St. John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota.
